What Do Salmon Faverolles Look Like?
Salmon Faverolles are one of those chickens you can usually recognize immediately.
The hens have soft salmon, cream and light brown coloring with fluffy faces created by their signature beards and muffs. Their legs are lightly feathered, and unlike most chicken breeds, Faverolles have five toes on each foot instead of four.
They have a wonderfully fluffy, almost round appearance that makes them especially popular with families and backyard chicken enthusiasts.
Salmon Faverolles roosters look dramatically different from the hens, developing much darker black, white, mahogany and straw-colored plumage as they mature.
What Color Eggs Do Salmon Faverolles Lay?
Salmon Faverolles typically lay tinted, cream or light brown eggs.
If you're building a colorful egg basket filled with blue, green, olive, dark chocolate and brown eggs, Salmon Faverolles can add a beautiful soft cream or light brown shade to the mix.
They are considered moderate layers rather than extremely high-production laying hens, with many hens producing approximately 150–200 eggs per year.
Are Salmon Faverolles Friendly?
This is one of the biggest reasons we love this breed.
Salmon Faverolles are generally known for being gentle, curious and people-friendly chickens. The Livestock Conservancy describes Faverolles as adaptable and curious birds that get along well with people of different ages and can be a good breed for beginning chicken owners.
Their sweet temperament can make them especially enjoyable for families who want chickens they can interact with rather than birds that immediately run in the opposite direction.
Every chicken has its own personality, of course, but Faverolles have earned a wonderful reputation as friendly backyard birds.
One thing to watch in mixed flocks
Because Salmon Faverolles can be so gentle, keep an eye on flock dynamics when introducing them to particularly dominant or aggressive chickens.
Providing plenty of feeding areas, water stations, hiding places and room to move away from other birds can make flock introductions easier.
Are Salmon Faverolles Good Chickens for Beginners?
Yes!
Their generally friendly temperament, moderate egg production and lovable personalities can make Salmon Faverolles a wonderful option for newer backyard chicken keepers.
Started pullets can make the experience even easier because they have already passed through the most delicate early chick stage.
At Izaak's Happy Hens, our started pullets are raised outdoors and acclimated to Arizona conditions before going to their new homes.
Can Salmon Faverolles Handle Arizona Heat?
Salmon Faverolles can live successfully in Arizona, but they are not a breed we would consider one of our strongest extreme-heat specialists.
Their fluffy feathering makes thoughtful summer management especially important.
During Arizona's hottest months, Salmon Faverolles, like all chickens living in our desert climate, need access to:
-
Deep, dependable shade throughout the day
-
Plenty of fresh, cool drinking water
-
Excellent airflow and ventilation
-
A dry, well-ventilated coop
-
Careful monitoring during extreme heat
Here in Tempe, summer temperatures can be brutal. Regardless of breed, no chicken should be expected to tolerate Arizona heat without proper shade, water and heat-management practices.
If maximum heat tolerance is your number-one priority, we also recommend researching some of the lighter-bodied breeds available for Arizona backyard flocks.
When Do Salmon Faverolles Start Laying Eggs?
Most pullets begin laying once they reach sexual maturity, but the exact age varies considerably between individual birds.
Breed, genetics, nutrition, daylight hours, season and environmental stress can all affect when a young hen lays her first egg.
Don't worry if one pullet starts laying before another of the exact same age. Chickens rarely follow an exact calendar!
Are Salmon Faverolles Good Family Chickens?
For many backyard families, this is where Salmon Faverolles really shine.
They're beautiful enough to immediately stand out in the flock, unusual enough to be fun for children to learn about and generally known for an approachable temperament.
Their:
Fluffy beards + feathered feet + five toes + sweet personalities
make them one of the most memorable breeds we raise.
For families building a backyard flock where personality matters just as much as egg production, Salmon Faverolles are absolutely worth considering.
